Nymphomania, also known as hypersexuality, is when a person has extremely intense and frequent sexual urges or performs sexual behaviors in an addictive manner. Most of the time the cause of nymphomania is unknown, but can often be caused by certain medical conditions or medications. There are many theories has to why people become nymphomaniacs. Although scientists have not agreed, most people believe that nymphomania is simple an addiction to sex. Since sexual addiction is not recognized as an official mental disorder, it is difficult to run down the real reason for its occurrence. Many people argue that there is no such thing as sexual addiction or nymphomania, and we are only judging people who have a stronger sex drive than ourselves.
Since there is not a consistent definition as to what nymphomania may be, there are many different names for the condition. Some of these names include compulsive masturbation, compulsive sexual behavior, cybersex addiction, erotomania, excessive sexual drive, hyperphyilia, hypersexuality, hypersexual disorder, problematic hypersexuality, sexual addiction, sexual compulsivity, sexual impulsivity, and out of control sexual behavior. While all of these terms aim to define the condition, they are all one and the same as nymphomania.
People who are said to have nymphomania often display the same types of symptoms or common actions. Some of these include compulsive masturbation, persistent thoughts about sex, promiscuity, personality changes, anxiety, depression, low self esteem, substance abuse or alcoholism, continuous unsuccessful relationships, obsession with sexual gratification, and outrageous sexual behavior. Again, there may be no correlation to any of these symptoms and nymphomania since there is no formal diagnosis for the condition. People may just like to have sex. A lot!
After reading the list of symptoms, you may not be surprised to know that many people believe nymphomania is derived from a past filled with emotional problems. Some will say that the “problem” has an emotional beginning and there is an underlying issue that needs to be resolved before the nymphomania will disappear. It has been suggested that nymphomania arises when someone feels inadequate as a sexual partner, has low self esteem about themselves, or has found attention they’ve been seeking by performing sexual acts. There is no proof to date that suggests that these statements are anything more than theories.
